Zarafa Pictures is a SAFTA awarding winning boutique production company. Our vision is to make world-class films that bring South African stories to an international stage. Our goal is to redeem the black and feminine identity through cinematic African storytelling. We hope to also invite a global audience into the world of South African stories.

Our production, Lakutshon’ Ilanga (When The Sun Sets) achieved international acclaim with a NAACP Image Award, a shortlisting for the 2022 Academy Awards. It is now streaming on HBO in the United States. Our production, Why The Cattle Wait, won Best Short Film at the 2026 SAFTAs.

CEO and Founder

Phumi Morare

Phumi is an NAACP Image Award and Academy Award Shortlisted Director and Producer dedicated to redefining African and feminine identities in cinema. She founded Zarafa Pictures to create innovative African female-led films and TV shows. With experience at Plan B Entertainment and Day Zero Productions, Phumi has strong industry connections. She holds an MFA in Film Directing from Chapman University and has worked in investment banking and management consulting. Phumi is represented by Echo Lake Entertainment in Beverly Hills.

Zeus is the Business Development & Distribution Partner at Zarafa Pictures, focused on expanding the company’s commercial opportunities and distribution network. His role centres on building strategic relationships with brands, platforms, distributors and industry partners, while developing new pathways for Zarafa Pictures’ film library and upcoming slate

Lakutshon' Ilanga

A young, Black nurse living in 1985 apartheid South Africa must face her worst fears when she learns that her activist, younger brother may be in danger when he doesn't return after school.

Why The Cattle Wait

Nomvula, a goddess, returns to earth to find her human lover, Thandiwe, while shape-shifting into animals to evade detection by humans. When she finds him, she is devastated to learn he has moved on. Desperate to reclaim him, she tries to convince him to return to the eternal world before she destroys the earth. Despite her efforts, her love remains unrequited, leading her to take drastic measures. The arrival of colonial oppressors signals their doomed love.
